HEAVY SNOWFLAKES DRIFTED DOWN IN THE PREdawn darkness as the tanks of Bruiser Company sat hovering over a highway that ran toward the city of Cavour.

A bitter chill ran through Rutger despite the tempest of emotions raging inside of him. Can’t she ever close that fucking hatch? He knew better than to look over at Staff Sergeant Faora. He kept his eyes glued to his screens.

They’d returned to the front three days before. Still untested, Bounty Hunter II vibrated around Rutger. He knew the tank would be tested today, because they were about to spearhead the assault on Cavour.

But Rutger’s thoughts were elsewhere. I can’t believe she’s divorcing me and trying to keep me from seeing Callie. He still hadn’t come to terms with that reality, though it really didn’t change anything. What? I’m not good enough for her, but that bitch still wants my money. He knew he shouldn’t look at it that way though. Technically the money would be child support for Callie. Either way, he was stuck here and they were light years away, same as before.

It could be worse. You could be out there. He shuddered at the thought while watching the grunts of third and fourth platoons trudging over snowy fields toward the tree line on their left. Their white and green active camouflage blended perfectly with the dark forest, the spire-like trees swallowing them like the jagged teeth of a great beast.

Task Force Marauder, consisting of the 5th Berserker Battalion and the 2nd Federation Army, had secured over sixty kilometers of territory during his absence in the rear, which already seemed an eternity ago to Rutger. The stress of returning to the front had already fatigued him, grinding him down mentally and physically. He missed a warm bed. And I miss Nicole. The thought of her made him smile for a second before vanishing in the storm of emotions whirling inside him.

Repub troops reportedly packed Cavour. Now confined to a smaller AO, enemy forces had concentrated into larger units, their defenses ever more elaborate as the task force drove east toward New Oslo. Though on the ropes with no real chance of victory at this point, the enemy fought on desperately, making the Federation and Berserkers pay with blood for every centimeter of ground.

Thankfully, civilian traffic on the highway had decreased. No wonder. Burnt-out vehicles and dead bodies lay strewn beside the road, pushed from the hardball by bladed engineer vehicles. Republic forces had lost civilian support in this area, and rumors abounded of them shooting civilians who attempted to flee toward Federation troops.

So stupid. They’d be better off sending them to us. Refugees slowed the Berserkers almost as much as the Fed yokels dragging their feet. For an army fighting to preserve their nation, the Feds never seemed eager for battle. Rutger somewhat understood, but their delays gave the Repub forces more time to prepare their defenses.

Faora’s voice in his earpiece snapped him back to the moment. “Listen up, boys. We’ll be leading the assault on Cavour.
